About Forests of the World
A group of biology students founded the organisation in 1983 under the name The Rainforest Group Nepenthes. Since then, we have grown substantially and in 2011 we became Forests of the World. Today, we have nearly 6,000 members and since 2022 we have proudly been a Strategic Partner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark.
Forests of the World is a Danish Green Development Organisation that Fights for a World with a Rich Forest Nature.
We have 40 years of experience in preserving and developing biodiverse forests. We work with practical initiatives in tropical forests, knowledge development, and political change for forests around the world
Our headquarters are in Denmark – Aarhus and Copenhagen – with regional offices in East Africa (Ethiopia – Addis Ababa), South America (Bolivia – Santa Cruz), and Central America (Honduras – La Ceiba). Together, they house a professional secretariat that work closely with a wide range of partners in the countries in which we are represented.
Voluntary is historically a big part of Forests of the World, as our volunteers bring knowledge and resources that enhance the cause for the forests and thereby, strengthen the whole organisations efforts.
Forests of the World are 100% dependent on contributions from members, private donors, Danish and international foundations, businesses, and public funds, including the funding received by being a strategic partner to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Over 200,000 Danes have supported our work for the rainforests through the well-known Rainforest Certificates.
Our mission

√ We support Indigenous Peoples and engage people in the fight for democracy, rights, and a dignified life in the forest
√ We contribute to solutions for global crises related to climate change, inequality, and the loss of biodiversity for the benefit of the world’s forests
We Fight for What We Stand For
Forests of the World Aims to Change the World
At Forests of the World, our hearts beat for the values of the forest and the diversity of plants, animals, and people who live in forests around the world. For four decades, we have worked for forest conservation and sustainable development in East Africa, South and Central America, Southeast Asia, Denmark, and globally.
In these years, we are witnessing the increasing pressure on forests and the people who live in them, who are already suffering from immense biodiversity loss and unjust marginalization, further exacerbated by climate change.
Research shows that forest conservation effectively and quickly slows climate change, reduces biodiversity loss, and creates a sustainable livelihood for the world’s poorest people. Yet, deforestation continues. Every six seconds, tropical forest the size of a football field disappears.
To stop this development, we need green solutions for more climate action, biodiversity, and global equality. How? Forests of the World offers a proposal through our strategy for 2021 to 2026, which you can read here!
