Coffee is a wonderful product, but its production can harm rainforests
Coffee accounts for 7% of the deforestation linked to the products imported into the EU. While coffee is cherished worldwide, its cultivation can have severe environmental consequences, particularly when rainforests are cleared to make way for plantations.
However, not all coffee production is destructive. Many small-scale farmers grow coffee responsibly, often using agroforestry systems. Forests of the World supports small-scale farmers in Latin America and Africa in transforming their land – often previously used for monoculture – into diversified agroforestry systems. These systems integrate coffee plants with shade-giving trees, subsistence crops, and other resources, providing both environmental benefits and improved livelihoods.
We also work to influence coffee producers, importers, and retailers to commit to sustainable practices that avoid deforestation or forest degradation. At the same time, we advocate for robust legislation to ensure that coffee contributing to deforestation is kept out of EU and Danish markets.

Coffee production in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is home to wild Arabica coffee, one of the world’s most treasured varieties. By supporting sustainable coffee production in agroforestry systems outside Ethiopia’s remaining forests, Forests of the World helps preserve biodiversity while creating better opportunities for local communities.
Political work
The EU’s groundbreaking Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), adopted in 2023, is a critical step forward in the fight against deforestation. Scheduled to take effect in 2025, this regulation requires companies to prove that their products have no connection to deforestation. However, its success relies on strong enforcement and collaboration among governments, businesses, and consumers. Forests of the World is committed to ensuring its full implementation.
Here’s how you can make a difference
Donate directly to coffee farmers
Your donation can help provide metal drying nets to smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, allowing them to increase yields from their sustainable coffee production.
By supporting these farmers, you’re not only improving their livelihoods but also encouraging forest conservation.
Buy responsible coffee
Together, we can create change by choosing coffee produced responsibly, with respect for forests and the people who depend on them.
Now, you can purchase coffee directly from the Ethiopian farmers partnered with Forests of the World. Your choice matters.
